The Bridges of Derry

Connecting a city, its people, and its story

The River Foyle runs through the heart of Derry, and the bridges that cross it are far more than infrastructure—they are symbols of connection, movement, and unity. Each bridge tells its own story and plays a vital role in linking communities across the city.

Craigavon Bridge

A rare double-deck design

The Craigavon Bridge is one of the most distinctive bridges in Ireland—and indeed Europe. Built in 1933, it is one of the few double-deck bridges in Europe, with traffic flowing on two separate levels.

For generations, it has been a key crossing point in the city, carrying people, commerce, and daily life across the Foyle. Its unique structure makes it instantly recognisable and a defining feature of Derry’s skyline.

Peace Bridge

A modern symbol of unity

Opened in 2011, the Peace Bridge is one of Derry’s most iconic modern landmarks. Designed as a graceful, curved pedestrian and cycle bridge, it physically and symbolically connects the Cityside and the Waterside.

More than just a crossing, the Peace Bridge represents the city’s progress and shared future—bringing communities together and creating a space where people meet, walk, and experience the city side by side.

Foyle Bridge

A vital link for the wider region

The Foyle Bridge is the largest of the three and serves as a major transport route, carrying traffic around the city and connecting the wider North West region. Opened in 1984, it plays a crucial role in easing congestion and supporting travel and trade.

While less central, its importance to the city’s infrastructure and economy cannot be overstated.

More Than Bridges

Together, these crossings do more than span a river—they connect neighbourhoods, histories, and communities. From the historic Craigavon Bridge to the modern Peace Bridge, each one reflects a different chapter in Derry’s story.

For visitors, walking these bridges offers a unique way to experience the city—taking in its views, its people, and its enduring spirit of connection.
